Counseling and Mental Health Services Fund
As of January 2022
As directed by the Board of Trustees, support for counseling and mental health services for survivors of former doctor Larry Nassar is available in the form of expense reimbursement. Starting Feb. 1, 2022, the fund will be administered by JND.
Eligibility
- Those who received treatment from Nassar at an MSU health clinic or as an MSU student-athlete.
Family Member Eligibility
- Natural parent, stepparent, adoptive parent or legal guardian of those who received treatment from Nassar at an MSU health clinic or as an MSU student-athlete.
- The spouse of those who receive treatment from Nassar, at an MSU health clinic or as an MSU student-athlete, during or after the time of treatment.
Qualifying Expenses (Updated February 2024)
- Out-of-pocket expenses related to:
- Medical procedures for related physical injuries (as approved by a mental health provider or primary care physician in writing).
- Group therapy: applicable to individuals with no insurance coverage, who are related to a survivor, and for whom a survivor’s therapist provides a recommendation for in writing.
- Extended family therapy (including fiancée and domestic partners*): applicable to individuals with no insurance coverage, who are related to a survivor, and for whom a survivor’s therapist provides a recommendation for in writing.
- Out-patient counseling and mental health services (including telehealth).
- In-patient hospitalization with a mental health diagnosis.
- Residential treatment with a mental health diagnosis.
- FDA-approved** oral and nasal pharmacy services.
- Ketamine infusion therapy.
- Service animals and emotional support animals.
- All available insurance coverage must be met before submitting for reimbursement.
Services potentially eligible for reimbursement:
- Partial hospitalization with a mental health diagnosis, which may be submitted for consideration.
Domestic partners (as part of a domestic partnership) are defined as two persons who:
- Are in a consensual relationship of mutual support, caring and commitment
- Share the common necessities of life, including a principal residence.
- Are not related by blood in a manner that would bar marriage in their state of principal residence.
- Are not married or in any other domestic partnership.
- Are at least 18 years of age and otherwise competent to enter into a contract.
Domestic partners should either provide a letter attesting that they are in a domestic partnership or, if their state of principal residence recognizes domestic partnerships, provide a copy of a completed Declaration of Domestic Partnership (or equivalent form) for their state
**Non-FDA-approved medications or medicinal treatments (e.g., psilocybin) will be considered with written approval from a licensed mental health professional or primary care physician.
Ineligible Expenses
- Partial hospitalization that is not related to the treatment of mental health, or for medical procedures for related physical injuries that are not approved by a licensed mental health professional or primary care physician in writing.
- Hospitalization for conditions other than mental health treatment, or for medical procedures for related physical injuries that are not approved by a licensed mental health professional or primary care physician in writing.
- Non-FDA*-approved prescription medications.
- Referral services, such as an Employee Assistance Program (EAP).
*Non-FDA-approved medications or medicinal treatments (e.g., psilocybin) will be considered with written approval from a licensed mental health professional or primary care physician.
Time Requirement
- Reimbursement requests must be submitted within 3 years from the date of service.
- Updates to the fund commence on the implementation date of the change. Updates are not retroactive.
