Board Chair Rema Vassar, Ph.D. issued the following statement at the conclusion of the April 21, 2023 board meeting in regards to the board's decision to maintain attorney-client privilege of the documents related to Larry Nassar:
"To those who spoke earlier today in public comment, I want you to know that we hear you. We see you. And we appreciate your passion in advocating for what you feel is best.
"Valerie, members of POSSE, and all survivors for your advocacy has not gone unnoticed. You continue to make positive change. Being courageous and fighting for others is lonely work sometimes. I am sorry for the pain this institution has caused you and the pain you must feel today, in this moment.
"I must share that in response to the Attorney General’s most recent request to waive attorney-client privilege, MSU’s general counsel will inform the AG’s Office that we will not take any new action. Therefore, we will continue to maintain attorney-client privilege.
"We understand that for those who continue to push for this transparency, this is not what you want to hear.
"On behalf of the board, please know that we are deeply sorry. We recognize that MSU is a continual site of trauma for survivors.
"We will devote time and resources to facilitate a healing culture for all members of our community.
"We are committed to treating you with the respect and care you deserve during this long, arduous journey ahead we have before us.
"On behalf of the board, I do apologize."
